That’s a fair point, and I think the PC3-12800 was a bit of a misnomer in the sense that it had the same chipset as the ddr3-1600. The difference between the two is that the PC3-12800 had two additional DVI ports (but not an additional VGA port), so it had three DVI ports. It also had a dual-link DVI port, but that’s a bit of a different story.

If it wasn’t for the two new DVI ports on the ddr3, it wouldn’t be able to support high resolutions. The ddr3 also supports two HDMI ports, two SCE ports, and a DVI port. If you’re looking for a new DVI-SCE-DVI rig, the ddr3 also supports a DVI-HDMI port.
