Birch trees are a very common sight in the United States and Canada. However, I recently read an article on The Huffington Post about how few of them were planted in US towns. And I was immediately intrigued.
A large portion of the forests on Earth are owned or managed by the US government. Birch trees don’t quite fit into that rulebook, but they’re growing in some of the biggest cities in the world. In fact, I believe our entire city of Chicago is a Birch forest.
By the end of the article, I was thinking that maybe we’ve got some sort of issue with the “fancy” name that the trees were given. But then I saw the pictures of a tree that had been planted in the middle of a busy street in Toronto, and I was even more intrigued.
I think that the idea of a single tree in a tree-filled street is really cool. The problem is that this little forest is now the biggest, most visible green space on the planet. In addition to the obvious benefits of a park, trees are also a great amenity for human habitation. We love to sit down outside after a long day and play games, and the trees are a great break from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.
The problem is that it is also the biggest green space in our city, so now that it has become the focal point of our city, we have to deal with its invasive species. In fact, there are now so many invasive species in the city that the city council has proposed to designate a 10,000-square-foot section of the city as a “biocontrol area.
The city council is considering this because it can’t keep up with the number of invasive species, plus the city council itself has already grown to a huge size. The 10,000-square-foot section of birch forest is going to be part of the new biocontrol area so they’re not going to be able to keep up with the many invasive species that exist there. The area is also going to be planted with native trees that provide shade and habitat for birds and other creatures.
