It’s true. A lot of us take the “as needed basis” approach with our mental state. Just like the food we eat and the physical activities we engage in, we need enough mental awareness to keep ourselves on the path of our highest potential. When we are constantly worried that something might go wrong, we are constantly worried that we could miss something.
I have always been of the belief that the only truly effective way to stay on the path of our highest potential is to practice what we preach. It is the most important life principle I know of. What is the most important principle? I’ve heard it so many times that I’m not sure what it is. I think it’s “do not worry, worry less.” My personal philosophy has been a little different.
When we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot, then we really need to be patient and let the autopilot go. I know these are the same things you are saying to yourself when you’re on autopilot, but I have also been working on learning this principle.
It has been awhile since I had a first-hand experience of the power of autopilot. Most of the time I’m not even aware that I’ve ever been on autopilot, I just take the time to listen to what I’ve heard. I don’t think I’ve been doing it as an actual human being. I have been practicing it for a couple of years. I think I’ve actually become more of a bystander of the autopilot than ever before.
It’s interesting how this principle can create a sense of control or freedom. When we are on autopilot we feel like there is no one to control us. When we are conscious we have an opportunity to control what we do.
As a person who has been on autopilot for a long time, you probably have a good idea of how it feels to be an autopilot. The only difference is that when you are on autopilot you don’t realize it. When you are conscious, you have an opportunity to control what you do. As you become more aware of your autopilot, you will likely find you can be more productive in it.
Like many of the other articles in this blog, “as needed basis” is a phrase we coined for the purpose of helping people become aware of their autopilot behavior and how to change their behavior. We would like to help others become aware of their autopilot behavior so that they can be more productive in it and not be the cause of their autopilot behavior.
We have a few more articles in this blog series on this very topic of awareness. In the next article we’ll discuss when and how to use the term as needed basis. For now, we’d like to know more of the purpose for that phrase.
The as needed basis is a term used in psychology and philosophy to describe people who are being triggered to do certain things but not being able to stop themselves. Like a child is being given a toy and they expect it to be used like a toy, but then they realize that it’s still a toy and they want it to go away. Or a person is being given a job and they are asked to complete it, but then they realize that it’s not a job.
I’m not saying it’s all to someone’s advantage, but I’m saying that to our detriment it’s just a way to let them know they’re being given the task of doing things their way.
